Dover and Deal Green Party Select New Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.

On 24th November 2022, Dover and Deal Green Party announced Christine Oliver was their new prospective parliamentary candidate, following a two week on-line ballot of local members.

Councillor Christine Oliver was elected to Deal Town Council in May 2019, and holds one of the eleven level 1 council seats currently held by Greens in Dover district.

She said, “I feel honoured that my colleagues want me to be the Green parliamentary spokesperson in this area. As the mother of two teenage girls, I feel strongly that they and all young people should inherit a liveable planet and society that is fair and just for everyone. That means that we need to decarbonise our economy fast and invest in a green economic revolution, ensuring that the transition is fair and that nobody is left behind. Our East Kent natural environment needs to be protected – from the over-development that is destroying our countryside and wildlife, and from the pollution that is harming our health. And that means Dover needs a Green Party voice to be elected to DDC in May 2023.“

At the Green Party meeting on the 24th November at Whitfield, Christine was warmly congratulated by all present, especially by the previous Green prospective parliamentary candidate, cllr Beccy Sawbridge, who represented the Greens in the 2017 and 2019 General Elections.

The local Green Party election agent and coordinator, Sarah Waite-Gleave said, “There are so very many issues on which it is left to us Greens to speak up for sense, reason and justice in these tough times. We need our new parliamentary spokesperson! We know Christine is an advocate of fair proportional voting which would provide the cleaner, less lobby-laden local and national government that will benefit ordinary people.”

Dover and Deal Green Party hold eleven level 1 council seats in Dover district, and they came a strong third in the 2021 KCC elections throughout the Dover district. Across Kent, there are now 23 Green Party councillors on Kent’s District or Borough Councils and the party is growing fast.
